About
Blunt Objects are one-of-a-kind patchwork quilts, made using repurposed and sustainable fabrics, designed and hand-stitched by artist Carolyn Thompson.
Carolyn applies her MA in Fine Art, and 25 years experience as a visual artist creating and exhibiting internationally, to her quilt designs. She spends days and weeks collecting complimentary fabrics then cutting, piecing and hand-stitching her quilts to create unique textile works that bring style, comfort, warmth, and a little quirk, to your home.
“A beautiful wholecloth quilt made by my grandmother’s cousin was the reason I began quilting over twenty years ago. When I was small, my Gran would cover the kitchen table with it so she could use it as an ironing board. It was something beautiful yet functional that would be passed down through generations, despite becoming slightly worn from all the ironing! I’m still fascinated by the level of detail and accuracy that was involved in its creation.

I grew up in the North East of England, in an old farmhouse where chilly mornings and cold nights were a given, so I understand the need for an extra layer or two around the house. These days, however, quilts are used all year round and for many different purposes, be it a cosy cover for a couch, a wallhanging for a stairwell, or a shoulder shawl for an evening of summer stargazing. Whatever you decide to do with yours, I hope you’ll enjoy using your Blunt Object as much as I will have enjoyed making it.”

The Quilts
The quilts you’ll find on this website sit somewhere between traditional and modern. While my designs tend to refer to the block structures and embrace the techniques of traditional patchwork, I use bold patterns and colourways to add contemporary twists.
I’m forever indebted to generations of quilt makers for the wealth of knowledge, experience and techniques that influence my own stitching. From them I have learnt much, and just as they did, in each new quilt and with every stitch I make I embed the thoughts and feelings experienced, the conversations held and the journeys travelled during the long hours of the quilt-making process.
All Blunt Objects quilts and wallhangings are made from repurposed and reused fabric with new natural fibres for the wadding, but being unique, each is constructed differently, so always make sure to check the dimensions, processes and materials in the individual quilt descriptions before purchasing.
A note on pricing
All quilts are individually priced. Each price reflects the size, materials and processes used to create the quilt. In addition to the time spent designing the pattern, and the many hours collecting fabrics that work well together from a variety of sources, a hand-stitched quilt can take weeks to sew.
Hand-tied quilts take less time than hand-quilted ones, while a quilt that is hand-pieced using the paper piecing method, rather than machine pieced, before being hand-quilted will take many hours more. Please check individual quilt details for both the price and the processes involved.
